DAVE O'HIGGINS

Sunday 23 October 2022
Hoochie Coochie, NE1 6SF

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF STRICTLY SMOKIN! We can’t quite believe that SSBB in it’s various forms has been on the go now for 20 years – but sure enough Michael set this band up in 2002 and it’s been running ever since! We’re getting in touch with as many previous members as we can to have a big celebration at our favourite venue: Hoochie Coochie, also featuring saxophone legend Dave O’Higgins! Dave O’Higgins’ tenor and soprano sax sounds are highly personal and recognisable, with a clear sense of melodic development and adventure. A popular performer with the public, with an excellent sense of pacing and presentation, he has a wide palette from Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson through to Stanley Turrentine and Michael Brecker. He has relentlessly pursued artistic and sonic exploration and development with a deep respect for the tradition of the music. Along with his own large ensembles: ‘Abstract Truth Big Band’ and ‘Two Minds Big Band’ – Dave has worked with some of the world’s finest musicans, including: Joey Calderazzo, Joe Locke, Joe Lovano, Phil Woods, Jimmy Smith, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee, Kurt Elling, Wayne Shorter, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stephane Grappelli, Michel Legrand. He has released 21 CDs as leader to date and wrote and produced the last Matt Bianco album, “Gravity”. Also on the CV: Frank Sinatra (the last London appearance – a week at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992) and a tour and album with Ray Charles (Strong Love Affair).

Michael Lamb’s STRICTLY SMOKIN’ BIG BAND return to Sage Gateshead after 2022’s sell-out performance – this time featuring guest vocalist MATT FORD. Famed, in particular, for his work with the John Wilson Orchestra, Matt is widely regarded as the finest big band singer in the UK. In 2006 Matthew was voted ‘Best UK Male Big Band Vocalist’ and nominated alongside Jamie Callum in the inaugural Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards. As a soloist Matthew makes regular appearances with the RTE and BBC Concert Orchestras, and has also worked with the Northern Sinfonia, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Halle and Philharmonia Orchestras. As a big band vocalist Matthew is always in demand, working with the BBC Big Band, Grammy nominated John Wilson Orchestra and many others including the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. In 2009 Matthew broadcast with the BBC Big Band for the 30th Anniversary of BBC Radio 2’s ‘Big Band Special’ programme. His appearances with the RTE Concert Orchestra are regularly broadcast on RTE 1 and Lyric FM throughout Eire, whilst his album recordings have aired across the UK on Radio 2.
